Traditionally, astrology is based on the relative positions and movements of celestial bodies including the planets and the constellations of the zodiac. A horoscope is the charting of celestial patterns as observed at the time and place of a person's birth or of the event in question. The ability of astrology to predict future trends and events is based on astrological transits and astrological progressions.

The word Astrology is derived from the Greek words astron and logos and means Star Study. This involves observing and recording the motions of the Sun, the Moon, the Planets and the stars. To assist in the organization of these records and observations the stars are commonly grouped together into patterns called constellations. The most important constellations where astrology is concerned are the twelve that are found within a 28 degree belt along the ecliptic path of the sun across the sky. These constellations form the twelve astrological signs of the zodiac.
